Even with six speakers, the laptop isn’t capable of true surround sound, since that requires speakers on either side of the listener at ear level. Some current laptops use two speakers to simulate the enveloping experience of surround sound. Acer’s laptop will do the same, but the simulation is better with six speakers than with two.
Acer Inc., the Taiwanese computer maker that bought Gateway last year, said on Tuesday that it now aims to take laptop users as close as they can get to the high-definition home theater experience.

Dell Rolls Out Sub-$900 Laptop with Blu-ray Drive
Dell is offering an Inspiron 1525 laptop that can play Blu-ray movies with prices starting at $879. Dell says the Inspiron 1525’s Blu-ray drive will play and burn DVDs and CDs, and a Blu-ray burner is also available. Dell also offers accessories for traveling. With the high-definition format war over, more PCs are expected to have Blu-ray drives.
With the high-definition format wars over, Dell is offering a laptop with Blu-ray for under $900. Aimed at movie buffs, the Inspiron 1525 with optional Blu-ray drive starts at $879.

Hackers Knock the Air Out of MacBook
A MacBook Air was successfully hacked in two minutes at a recent hacking contest, though it stood up to a full day of trials before that. The Air — along with the computers in the contest running Ubuntu and Vista — all hung tough during the first full day of hacking via remote zero-day exploits. Only when hackers were allowed to try and trick surfers to click on a malicious Web link did the Air finally fall.
A computer with a sky-high public profile these days — the much talked-about and often coveted MacBook Air from Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) — was the first laptop to get cracked in a security hacking contest Thursday.
